The wrong bicycle for the job is the perfect one

You can find exactly the perfect bicycle for any use: a cyclocross bike for mud, a time trial bike for speed, a cargo bike for a heavy load, an electric bike to lighten the load.

But you don’t need the perfect bicycle to enjoy the ride, especially when it’s a beautiful day in Castiglione della Pescaia along Italy’s Tuscan coast.

The bicycle on the left has aero rims and a narrow gear range, neither feature of any help on the climb from sea level. Add to that the baby seat and the balance bike strapped to it. And then of course there’s the baby.

But this is as far as the climb goes today. For gravity’s siren call sounds, and the rider responds with a quick left-hand turn, an even quicker track stand and a single word to his passenger…
