Here’s the dock in Castiglione della Pescaia, along the Tuscan coast.

If I raised the camera you would see the faint outline of Isola del Giglio, site of the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster. If I kept the camera up and panned right across the Mar Tirreno, you would see where Napoleon was exiled for a year before meeting the world’s first Waterloo: Isola del Elba.

Tragedy in one direction, hubris in another: shadows of history on the horizon. But all that is out of frame.

If not entirely out of mind.
